Maurice Lacroix, a Swiss watch founded in 1975, has recently sponsored two kiteboard lovers to successfully cross the 560-km Magellan Strait in extreme weather. In extreme weather, These two warriors are not afraid of the cold and strong winds to take kitesurfing to a whole new level and let more people know about this extreme sport.
For kitesurfers Geza Scholtz and André Scholtz from Zurich’s Seefeld district who love kitesurfing, strong winds, cold temperatures and persistently low visibility have definitely created hardships. On January 7, 2013, they realized their great dream: crossing the Magellan Strait with a kite board. ‘We congratulate the expedition team, who once again proved that we should stick to our dreams to make our dreams come true. Despite the difficult environment, the team overcame all challenges in a timely manner.’ Said Marc Gläser, general manager of Le Méridien, which sponsored the event.
On February 20, 2013, two Zurich dentists crossed a 560 km Magellan Strait with a kite board, setting a world record in extreme weather and taking kite surfing to a whole new level.
The Strait of Magellan is located between the southernmost tip of South America and Tierra del Fuego, and is named after the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan crossed the strait for the first time in 1520 on his orbit around the earth. After the Panama Canal opened in 1914, only large transport vessels that could not pass through the canal would use the Strait of Magellan. This strait is considered to be one of the most difficult and dangerous routes due to the icy sea water, strong howling winds and low visibility. This cross-travel journey requires the full attention of the entire team. The ‘Emmett Magellan Expedition’ not only set a record of endurance in sports, but also left it in the history. ‘We reached our limits and held on to it. The feeling of achieving our goals is beyond words,’ said Geza Scholtz, Swiss kitesurfer at Le Meridien’s Magellan Strait Expedition.
The slogan of Le Méridien sponsoring this expedition is ‘Your time is now!
The ‘Emmett Magellan Strait Expedition’ requires not only a world record for athletic performance, but also a journey of discovery after weeks of adventure and new experiences.
